Many customization options are possible, including but not limited to:
Providing the connectors from the solder side so MINI-MAX/51 can be mounted on a carrier board as a core module.
5 Volt regulator can be removed for operation from a regulated 5 Volt DC supply.
Microcontroller can be replaced with alternative 8051's with lower cost, higher speed
and/or other features.
