Electric kilns are widely used in ceramics shops for transforming the clay into finished ceramics. It is useful to be able to monitor the inside temperature of the kiln for precise control over the baking process. Since the inside of the kiln may reach temperature over 1000 C, thermocouples are widely used to measure such high temperatures. An inexpensive kiln pyrometer can be constructed using off-the-shelf BiPOM products and standard thermocouples. The application described here displays the kiln temperature on an LCD, LED or VFD display.
